DR: Tackling Illegal Drug Trafficking Gains Momentum

The information was released last night by the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), which indicated that together with members of the Specialized Anti-Money Laundering Prosecutor’s Office they carried out four simultaneous raids in the province of Santiago de los Caballeros.
On Monday, the fight against illegal drug trafficking is gaining strength in the Dominican Republic, where operations are constant throughout the national territory and in the last few hours more than 300 kilograms (kg) were incinerated.

Just a day after the Attorney General’s Office reported that 278 kg of marijuana (91.23 per cent) and the rest of cocaine, crack, methamphetamine and heroin had been burned in the continuing fight against this scourge, more than 500 pounds of prohibited substances were seized in another raid the day before.
The information was released last night by the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD), which indicated that together with members of the Specialized Anti-Money Laundering Prosecutor’s Office they carried out four simultaneous raids in the province of Santiago de los Caballeros.
The DNCD press release said that during the raids carried out in the sectors of Gurabo and Los Jardines, in Santiago, they confiscated in a residence several sacks containing some 500 pounds of marijuana, as well as ecstasy and ketamine.
The note indicated that 10 vehicles, eight mobile phones, a firearm, a scale and cash, among other evidence, were also seized.
It was reported that the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions raided a residence and two flats, where three Dominicans were arrested, while other members of the criminal structure are being sought to be placed at the disposal of the Permanent Attention Jurisdiction of Barahona.
The DNCS explained that the authorities have been monitoring this group for more than six months. Its members received the illegal substances in speedboats from Colombia and Jamaica, via the Dominican provinces of Barahona and Montecristi, and then distributed them in Santiago de los Caballeros and other parts of the country.
According to the text, the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the DNCD are keeping the investigation open and expect to provide details as the process progresses.
The seized substances were sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) for analysis.
